35, hyperkinetic and extremely successful

Gary Vaynerchuk is 35 years old, a New Yorker with Russian roots, successful businessman, New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author, popular speaker and frequent guest on successful TV shows in America. And Gary has achieved this all by himself. By himself and by using social media.

From $3 million to $45 million in 8 years time

Gary’s father opened a wine shop in 1978 which accounted for $ 3,000,000 in annual sales by 1997. Then Gary came. He saw the opportunity of web shops and founded the online wine shop Wine Library. As a result Gary increased the sales of his father’s wine shop from 3 to 45 million dollars per year in eight years time. Not bad in difficult economic times.

YouTube, Twitter, Facebook… for and with his customers

Gary immediately saw the value of social media. In 2006 he started up Wine Library TV, a daily internet show where Gary – with his own energetic style – answers questions from fans and assesses wines. The show became an internet and business hit. In 2011 Gary made his 1000th episode. Gary is also immensely popular on Twitter and Facebook. He has around 900,000 enthusiastic followers on Twitter and about 69,000 fans on Facebook. And his business? Immensely successful. The wine shop is making over $60 million per year. Thanks to Gary, and thanks to social media.

Where does Gary get the time for social media from?

The real question is: Where does Gary get the motivation and discipline from to record 1,000 episodes of Wine Library TV, send more than 50,000 tweets and talk daily with his fans on Facebook? Since he also owns a wine shop and his private marketing agency, he writes books and he flies around the world to give presentations.

To say it in Gary’s words: “If you want to make it happen, you’ll have to bleed your f*cking eyeballs out” or “pounding on the keyboard until your wrists throb and your eyeballs bleed.” So hard work and a lot of discipline. But you will get something in return.

What is the reason for Gary’s success with social media?

Gary Vaynerchuk has always actively listened to the wishes, needs and demands of people on the web. For example, he is searching daily for online questions or conversations about wine and marketing. By responding frequently and effectively (even if people are not yet fans, followers or customers) Gary does not only have customers, but a whole army of ambassadors for his companies. The best word-of-mouth advertising. Word-of-mouth advertising that is spreading faster en further than ever before thanks to social media.
